Anthurium BWMD #1

BWMDB 1 is one of the first Anthurium crosses I ever made, combining my Black Widow × Michelle, originally purchased from Tezula, with a Dorayaki x BVEP that I acquired from Scott.

The Dorayaki x BVEP pollen parent is really compact, with velvety, almost perfectly round leaves that harden off really dark, and a distinctive kissing sinus.

My goal with this cross was to combine the dark leaves and spidery venation of Black Widow × Michelle with the compact growth habit and rounded leaf shape of Dorayaki x BVEP. I wanted to create a darker, rounder, more compact plant with spidery veins.

The cross produced several great plants, with three standing out, each one remarkably different from the others.

BWMDB 1 has almost forked, lightning-like veins and really dark hardened leaves. The emergents are red and the veins are bright red/pink.

The plant stays relatively small with a compact growth habit, and is a good grower and breeder.

What truly makes BWMDB 1 one of my favorites is its breeding potential. Its genetics are great.

When crossed with Araña, BWMDB 1 has produced some incredible plants such as Cherry Bomb and a number of others pictured in the mother plant gallery.
